Fleet truck on highway

Commercial trucking is under more pressure than ever to improve fuel efficiency, keep drivers happy, and bring down total cost of ownership. That is the gap the International S13® Integrated Powertrain was built to close: a purpose-designed system aimed at performance, efficiency, and reliability together rather than one at the expense of the others.

Here is why fleet owners and operators are moving to the S13 Integrated Powertrain and the truck models it powers.

1. Purpose-Built Integration

Rather than assembling a powertrain from several manufacturers' parts, International designed the S13 from a clean slate, not off the A26, N13, or any earlier engine platform. Its three core components — the S13® engine, T14 transmission, and dual-stage aftertreatment system — were engineered together, and that ground-up approach shows up as a quieter, smoother ride.

The engine offers seven ratings, topping out at 515 horsepower and 1,850 lb.-ft. of torque at 2,000 RPM. Even the most fuel-focused option, code 12BGT, makes 400 horsepower with full torque available from as low as 900 RPM. The compression ratio rises to 23:1 from the A26's 20.5:1, which improves combustion efficiency, power, and fuel economy.

A broad gear ratio spread keeps the powertrain working across flat highway and steep grade alike, and the redesigned compression release brake delivers up to 470 horsepower of braking, operating roughly 300 RPM higher than the previous A26 brake for more control on descents.

One of the bigger changes is what came out: the EGR cooler and variable-geometry turbocharger are gone. Conventional designs route around 20 percent of exhaust gas back into the engine, which caps turbocharger efficiency. The S13 uses a fixed-geometry turbocharger and drops the EGR cooler, so nearly all exhaust energy reaches the turbo — a more complete fuel burn, better output, and improved long-term reliability.

2. Industry-Leading Fuel Efficiency

Fuel is a large share of any fleet's operating cost. The S13 Powertrain reaches up to 15 percent better fuel efficiency than previous models, helped by the dual-stage aftertreatment system and revised engine calibration.

Several engineering changes work together to cut parasitic losses and sharpen combustion:

  1. Low RPM, high torque operation — running at lower RPM while making high torque means fewer fuel injections and lower consumption
  2. Advanced engine architecture — a redesigned cylinder and piston head with better cooling, paired with a dual overhead camshaft carrying an integrated compression release brake and parallel valve pattern
  3. Efficient fan design — the cooling fan drops from 10 blades to 6, reducing drag
  4. Optimized combustion — higher compression ratio, increased air-to-fuel ratio, and a 250-bar peak cylinder pressure, plus longer burn duration, XPI injectors at lower pressure, and a reverse-rotating turbine wheel
  5. Reduced internal friction — improved liners, piston rings, bearings, and coatings, with a single countershaft geartrain in the T14
  6. Lower-pressure fuel pump — 1,800 bars against the A26's 2,500, roughly 28 percent less, so less energy and less system stress
  7. Lower pumping losses — optimized coolant pump size and flow, refined intake and exhaust paths, and separate intake and exhaust cams for timing precision

3. Reduced Operating Costs

Over the long run the S13® Integrated Powertrain is built to lower total cost of ownership through simpler design and easier maintenance. Fewer moving parts, less friction, and the removal of the EGR cooler and VGT mean less to go wrong, which shows up as fewer service events and lower repair bills. Longer oil drain intervals, better fuel economy, and diagnostics through International 360® help fleets cut downtime and schedule maintenance deliberately rather than reactively. Those savings compound.

4. Power Take-Off Options for Vocational Work

The S13® is no longer limited to long-haul and regional work. It is now available in International HX520, HX620, HV515, and HV615 trucks, which pushes it into vocational territory. Those HX and HV Series models are built for construction, dump, refuse, towing, and logging, where steady power and durability are not optional.

S13-equipped severe-duty trucks offer several Power Take-Off configurations: Front Engine PTO, Rear Engine PTO, and single or dual-output transmission PTOs. These let the transmission's gear-driven power run dump bodies, cement mixers, cranes, and similar equipment. All PTOs are factory-installed and carry the same warranty as the T14 Transmission.

The T14 also adds vocational drive modes including Off-Road, Manual, and Paver, and its deep crawler gears give the low-speed control and torque that awkward job sites demand.

5. Improved Uptime

The S13® was designed to keep trucks working. Removing complex, failure-prone components like the EGR cooler and variable-geometry turbocharger and replacing them with simpler, more durable alternatives lowers the odds of an unexpected breakdown. The integrated design also improves serviceability, with fewer parts and better access for technicians. Combined with International 360® remote diagnostics and predictive maintenance tools, fleet managers can address problems before they turn into expensive failures.

6. Driver-Centric Performance

Drivers notice the smooth shifting and responsive power. The T14 automated manual transmission reads road conditions and adjusts, and the engine makes its power with little noise or vibration. A better day behind the wheel supports both retention and productivity.

Available Truck Models with the S13 Integrated Powertrain

The S13 Integrated Powertrain is currently offered on these models:

  1. International LT Series — long-haul, known for comfort, visibility, and efficiency
  2. International RH Series — regional haul and urban delivery, maneuverable with fuel savings
  3. International HX Series — vocational and severe-duty applications, now with S13 power

Whether the goal is lower fuel costs, longer truck life, or a better driver experience, the International S13 Integrated Powertrain delivers across the board.
