Why the International S13 Integrated Powertrain is a Game Changer for Fleets

Jun. 12 2025 News By Team Wieland

The commercial trucking industry is under more pressure than ever to boost fuel efficiency, improve driver satisfaction, and reduce total cost of ownership. That's where the International S13® Integrated Powertrain comes in—a purpose-built system designed from the ground up to optimize performance, efficiency, and reliability across the board.

Here’s why fleet owners and operators are making the switch to the S13 Integrated Powertrain and the truck models it powers.

1. Purpose-Built Integration
Unlike pieced-together powertrains from multiple manufacturers, the S13 Integrated Powertrain was designed entirely from a clean slate - not based on the A26, N13, or any prior International engine platforms. Its three core components—the S13® engine, T14 transmission, and dual-stage aftertreatment system—were engineered in unison to create a seamlessly integrated system. This deliberate, ground-up design approach results in a quieter, smoother ride and elevates the performance drivers have come to expect from International trucks.

The S13 engine offers seven distinct ratings, with output up to 515 horsepower and 1,850 lb.-ft. of torque at 2,000 RPM. Even the most fuel-efficient option, code 12BGT, delivers 400 horsepower, with full torque available as low as 900 RPM. An improved compression ratio of 23:1—up from the A26’s 20.5:1—means better combustion efficiency, enhanced power, and greater fuel economy.

To handle a wide range of driving conditions, the S13 Powertrain features a broad gear ratio spread for optimized performance on flat highways and steep grades alike. The newly engineered compression release brake provides up to 470 horsepower of braking power, operating at around 300 RPM higher than the previous-generation A26 brake for added control during descents.

One of the most significant upgrades is the removal of the EGR cooler and variable-geometry turbocharger (VGT). In conventional designs, the EGR system diverts roughly 20% of exhaust gases back into the engine, limiting turbocharger efficiency. The S13 replaces this setup with a fixed-geometry turbocharger (FGT) and eliminates the EGR cooler, allowing nearly 100% of exhaust energy to reach the turbo. The result? A more complete fuel burn, improved engine output, and enhanced long-term reliability.

2. Industry-Leading Fuel Efficiency
Fuel accounts for a significant portion of fleet operating costs. The S13 Powertrain achieves up to 15% greater fuel efficiency compared to previous models. Innovations like the dual-stage aftertreatment system and optimized engine calibration contribute to this gain, helping fleets save money mile after mile.

The S13 Integrated Powertrain introduces a suite of engineering improvements that work together to reduce parasitic losses, optimize combustion, and increase fuel efficiency:

  • Low RPM, High Torque Operation
The S13 engine runs at lower RPMs while delivering high torque, reducing the number of fuel injections needed—leading to lower fuel consumption and greater efficiency.

  • Advanced Engine Architecture
A redesigned cylinder and piston head with enhanced cooling pairs with a dual overhead camshaft (DOHC) featuring an integrated compression release brake and parallel valve pattern. This architecture reduces parasitic losses and boosts thermal management.

  • Efficient Fan Design
The engine cooling fan was downsized from 10 blades to 6, reducing drag and improving overall powertrain efficiency.

  • Optimized Combustion
A higher compression ratio, increased air-to-fuel ratio, and a new peak cylinder pressure of 250 bars improve combustion quality. Innovations like longer fuel burn duration, XPI fuel injectors operating at lower pressures, and a reverse-rotating turbine wheel also contribute to cleaner, more efficient fuel burn.

  • Reduced Internal Friction
Enhanced materials for liners, piston rings, bearings, and coatings, combined with a single countershaft geartrain in the T14 Transmission, result in less internal drag and smoother power delivery.

  • Low-Pressure Fuel Pump
The S13’s high-pressure fuel pump operates at just 1,800 bars—28% less than the 2,500 bars needed in the previous A26 engine—requiring less energy and reducing stress on the system.

  • Lower Pumping Losses
Further efficiencies were achieved by optimizing the coolant pump size and flow rate, refining intake and exhaust air paths, and using DOHC with separate cams for intake and exhaust timing precision.

3. Reduced Operating Costs

Over the long haul, the S13® Integrated Powertrain is engineered to lower total cost of ownership through smarter design and simplified maintenance. Fewer moving parts, reduced friction, and the elimination of components like the EGR cooler and VGT mean there’s less that can go wrong—resulting in fewer service events and lower repair costs. Extended oil drain intervals, improved fuel economy, and advanced diagnostics through International 360® help fleets minimize downtime and plan maintenance more strategically. These savings compound over time, making the S13 Powertrain not just a performance upgrade—but a financial advantage for every fleet.

4. Power Take-Off (PTO) Options for Vocational Demands
The S13® Integrated Powertrain is no longer limited to long-haul and regional applications—it’s now available in International HX520, HX620, HV515, and HV615 trucks, expanding its capabilities into the vocational space. These HX and HV Series models are built for tough jobs in construction, dump, refuse, towing, and logging—environments where consistent power and durability are non-negotiable.

To meet these demands, S13-equipped severe-duty trucks offer multiple Power Take-Off (PTO) configurations, including Front Engine PTO (FEPTO), Rear Engine PTO (REPTO), and single or dual-output transmission PTOs. These options allow the transmission’s gear-driven power to operate essential equipment like dump bodies, cement mixers, cranes, and more. All PTOs are factory-installed and backed by the same warranty as the T14 Transmission, ensuring seamless integration and long-term reliability.

Further tailoring the powertrain for vocational use, the T14 Transmission includes specialized drive modes such as Off-Road, Manual, and Paver. Its deep crawler gears deliver the low-speed control and torque needed for navigating challenging job sites, giving operators the precision and power they need to get the job done.

5. Improved Uptime

The S13® Integrated Powertrain is designed with uptime in mind, helping fleets keep trucks on the road and out of the shop. By eliminating complex, failure-prone components like the EGR cooler and variable-geometry turbocharger, and replacing them with simpler, more durable alternatives, the system reduces the likelihood of unexpected breakdowns. The integrated design also improves serviceability, with fewer parts and easier access for technicians. Paired with International 360® remote diagnostics and predictive maintenance tools, fleet managers can proactively address issues before they become costly failures—maximizing uptime and ensuring consistent, reliable performance across every route.

5. Driver-Centric Performance
Drivers appreciate how the S13® Powertrain delivers smooth shifting and responsive power. The T14 automated manual transmission anticipates road conditions and adjusts accordingly, while the engine delivers power with minimal noise and vibration. A better driving experience leads to greater retention and improved productivity.
